SGS Inspects Storage Tanks in Jakarta Using Industrial Rope Access

SGS successfully conducted Periodic Tank Inspection in Jakarta using Industrial Rope Access. As some areas were difficult to reach, Industrial Rope Access was the ideal solution for the SGS team to successfully perform and complete the inspection project.

The storage of large quantities of hazardous substances entails risk to the population, the environment and the surrounding area. Spills of these hazardous substances into the soil can result in expensive decontamination processes. In order to avoid environmental contamination caused by uncontrolled corrosion and to assure that storage tanks meet local regulations and relevant standards, SGS Industrial Services provides Periodic Tank Inspection.

During the inspection of storage tanks inspectors and technicians can have difficulties completing their task as some locations are hardly accessible. Industrial Rope Access, one of the proven methods of Periodic Tank Inspection, is needed when conventional inspection is not appropriate, mostly because of height or in areas where access is difficult.

During the inspection of storage tanks in Jakarta, the SGS team performed Industrial Rope Access as the Ultrasonic Testing crawler was unable to pass the stringer supports within the tank and therefore could not monitor the condition at the top of the tank. The SGS Competence Center for Industrial Rope Access in Singapore provided a two-man team which carried out the Ultrasonic Testing manually. Thus, the inspection work in Jakarta was a great success, completed on time and within budget.

Rope access is a form of work positioning, initially developed from techniques used in climbing and caving, which applies practical ropework to allow workers to access difficult-to-reach locations without the use of scaffolding, cradles or mobile elevated work platforms.

As Rope Access requires well trained personnel and special access equipment, SGS technicians receive extensive Rope Access training as well as independent assessment and are required to undergo training every three years. SGS, member of the Industrial Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA), regularly inspects the special equipment and conducts the rope access training as well as the operational work in line with international guidelines.

As inspectors often face similar access problems in other sites in the Southeast Asian region, SGS plans to extend its Industrial Rope Access services and set up a special tank inspection team to perform independent assessment, testing and verification of storage tanks where access could not be granted otherwise.

The Storage Tank Technical Audits by SGS are conducted in accordance with EN 14015, API 650 or 653, EEMUA 159, or based on clients’ specifications. These inspections include, but are not limited to the evaluation of the bottom, the shell and the roof of the tank, as well as the checking of security instruments. SGS’s inspection experts have the years of experience needed to manage a wide range of measurement situations. SGS technicians receive extensive training and independent assessment and are required to undergo re-training every three years. The equipment is regularly inspected and well maintained. All SGS rope access training and operational work is conducted in line with International Guidelines. SGS is also a member of IRATA, the Industrial Rope Access Trade Association.
